Have you ever had your picture taken only to be disappointed in your smile when you see it? Are your teeth stained, misshapen, or disproportionate? Fortunately, dental veneers can come to the rescue! Read on to learn what they are, why you might want them, and how to schedule your veneers consultation.
So, What Exactly Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are very thin porcelain overlays that adhere to the surface of your teeth, leaving them whiter, brighter, and healthier-looking. Plus, because veneers look just like ordinary teeth, nobody will know you have them. You’ll look and feel like a million bucks!
What Are Some of the Reasons I Might Want Veneers?
Red wine, coffee, tea, colas, and fruits … all these items can stain your teeth, leaving them an unflattering yellow shade. At-home whitening kits and in-office whitening procedures are great, but they can only bleach your teeth so much; there is a limit as to how white your teeth can get. This can be especially frustrating when you dream of having pearlies every bit as white and bright as your favorite celebrity smile.
You may be thinking that orthodontic work can fix your smile. While braces or clear aligners are great for straightening your teeth, it may not work for what you really want. No amount of tooth movement will camouflage disproportionate and misshapen teeth.
Dental veneers enhance your smile, improving the look of teeth that are:
- Worn Down
- Discolored or Stained
- Chipped or Cracked
- Uneven
- Irregularly Shaped
- Spaced Far Apart
What Occurs During the Dental Veneers Procedure?
Typically, dental veneers at Smile Hilliard require 2-3 appointments: a consultation, a fitting, and the application itself.
The consultation is a very important first step. This ensures that what you want your dream smile to look like is conveyed to your dentist. You might even bring in a picture of yourself when you liked your smile. Letting the pros know your likes and dislikes is essential to ensure that your expectations are met.
Once we’ve taken x-rays and examined them to make sure you’re a good candidate, we’ll prepare your teeth for veneers. This is done by filing off just a millimeter of enamel from your existing teeth with the use of local anesthetic. In some cases, this step isn’t even necessary, depending on the condition of your teeth.
Afterward, we’ll get impressions of your teeth to ensure a good veneer fit. These impressions will be sent to a dental lab that will create your veneers, making sure they’re the right size, shape, and color. In addition, temporary veneers may or may not be necessary while the real ones are being expertly fabricated at the lab.
Once we receive your veneers back from the lab, you’re ready to have them applied. During this part of the process, we’ll test out the fit and make sure you’re happy with them before the application begins. The cementation process is quick and simple, similar to having a crown placed. Lastly, any excess bonding cement will be removed, and you’ll be all set, as you walk out of our office with your new, beautiful movie star smile!
What Are the Advantages of Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers have many advantages, including:
- They look natural.
- The gums tolerate porcelain well.
- They are resistant to stains.
- They offer a more conservative approach to changing a tooth’s color and shape.
